DR. CHUN TSE RELEASES NEW BOOK ON THOMAS BOSTON’S THEOLOGY OF ASSURANCE

Carey Theological College is delighted to announce that Dr. Chun Tse, Assistant Professor in Biblical Studies (New Testament), has recently published his book The Marrow of Certainty: Thomas Boston’s Theology of Assurance. Dr. Tse’s book is a significant contribution to the life and theology of Scottish theologian-pastor Thomas Boston, providing the first-ever intellectual biography of Boston in his Scottish context and controversies. In his work, Dr. Tse expounds on Boston’s theology of assurance, focusing on six dimensions: trinitarian, covenantal, Christological, soteriological, ecclesiastical, and sacramental. He explores the ways in which Boston’s understanding of assurance is both a divine gift theologically and a human endeavor pastorally.

Carey Theological College is excited to announce the release of Anabaptist Meditations: Thirty Days of Biblical Reflection from the Founders of the Tradition, written by our very own President, Rev. Dr. Colin Godwin. This book was inspired by Colin’s earlier research into sixteenth-century Anabaptist missiology, and is a historical/theological devotional book designed for individuals and small groups.

With great sadness, we would like to inform you of the passing of Dr. William H. Brackney (Bill) on Sunday, November 13, 2022. Bill brought significant experience from his years of ministry to the academic role at Carey Theological College. He first joined us as a Visiting Scholar and a Co-Director of the Doctor of Ministry program in 2017. Bill then continued serving at Carey and was appointed as the Pioneer MacDonald of Baptist Theology and Ethics. Later on, Bill also took the responsibility of becoming the Interim Academic Dean in 2020.

After a competitive and global search, Carey Theological College is excited to welcome Dr. Chun Tse as Assistant Professor of Biblical Studies (New Testament). Chun Tse grew up in Hong Kong and moved to the United States to pursue his studies in electrical engineering, earning a B.S., M.S., and Ph.D. from the University of Maryland. In 2001, Chun and his wife received a call to full-time ministry at a theological conference in New York. Subsequently, he earned his Master of Divinity at Bethel University in Minnesota and Master of Theology at Westminster Theological Seminary in Pennsylvania. He was a congregational pastor at Monmouth Community Christian Church and a visiting pastor at Rutgers Community Christian Church in New Jersey.

It brings us great sorrow to share that Leslie Stephen Biggs passed away on September 19, 2022. Les was deeply loved and highly respected by his colleagues and students. He was a wonderful pastor in the CBWC denomination and an adjunct faculty member at Carey Theological College. We are forever grateful for and blessed by the years of contributions that he has given to Carey. He will always be remembered for his thoughtfulness and wisdom, which has inspired so many of us as followers of Christ.

Gerry served on the Carey Board of Administration during a major expansion of the Carey Campus that has seen over 600 Christian undergraduates live in community during their studies at UBC. We are very grateful for and blessed by his contributions and service to Carey.

Hello Graduates of 2021! It has been an interesting time for you, your families, your communities, and the entire world. It has required some changes in our lives, sometimes for the best, other times as a necessity, and sometimes regrettably things have had to take a step back. Here at Carey, we’re quite aware of this as we have had to make adjustments to our graduation ceremonies for the last two years. We’ve tried pushing dates back, explored options that then fell through, and even contemplated ways we could ship materials around the world (but it seems the Ever given and Vancouver’s own postal service woes were denying us this basic service).

Early congratulations to our alumni, Rev. Paul Shen (MPM, 2020) and Rev. Angel Tong (MDiv, 2020) on their upcoming ordination! They will be ordained into the priesthood at 3pm this Saturday (December 4th, 2021), at the Church of the Good Shepherd under the Diocese Anglican Network in Canada. They will be serving within the ministries of Asian and Multicultural Ministries in Canada (AMMiC). Everyone is invited to attend the service in person or online.

It is with a heavy heart that we share David Holten passed away on Sunday, March 14, 2020, due to cancer. We are grateful for and blessed by his contributions as a friend of Carey, Board member and Treasurer. He was instrumental in helping Carey’s management with its strategic turnaround. Wherever David served, he would often express his love for God’s people and for Scripture. He has left a legacy of Christian devotion in the hearts of many.

VCEMF x Carey: Equipping God’s Faithful Leaders

On September 14th, 2020 VCEMF invited Carey to participate in their monthly meeting – entitled “Equipping God’s Faithful Leaders”. During this meeting, Carey shares what they have learned throughout the years of being an online seminary and what they have planned for the future. Carey and VCEMF have agreed to release the meeting to benefit all those who were not able to attend that morning.

Reverend Dr. Philip Collins, aged 88, passed away peacefully on May 31, 2019. Collins was the Principal of Carey Hall from 1985 to his retirement in 1994. Known as a kind, faithful and discerning leader, Collins helped to solidify Carey’s mission as both a Christian residence and a theological institution. He was also a member of the faculty, serving as the Director of Field Education and helped to establish the Certificate in Ministry first for Mustard Seed Church, and then for international work in Kenya, where he travelled to teach with other faculty members.

Congratulations to Carey Professor, Dr. Bill Brackney, on the release of his new theological work, The Spirit among the Dissenters: Other Voices in Understanding the Spirit of God (February 2019). The book is published by Wipf and Stock of Eugene, Oregon. Dr. Brackney indicates this is the first of his efforts to produce popular, church-useful scholarship on contemporary theological topics.

SHOUSE APPOINTED DOCTOR OF MINISTRY STREAM DIRECTOR

Dr. John W. Shouse has been appointed director of the Carey D.Min. Stream in Preaching and Worship. Dr. Shouse is currently professor of theology at Gateway Seminary in Ontario, California. He has taught in preaching and worship and theology and the dramatic arts for several decades and is a published writer and recognized speaker.
