SPECIAL NOTICE: Novel coronavirus (COVID-19) Response

Updated March 16, 2020

Carey’s Continued Response to COVID-19

Our concern for the well being of all of our community is paramount. Carey Theological College continues to respond to the spread of the COVID-19 virus. While there are no confirmed cases of the virus in our immediate environment at UBC, the following measures are being taken.

As of March 17, 2020, in support of social distancing protocols, Carey’s staff and faculty who are able to work from home will be encouraged to do so until April 3, or until further notice. Those who cannot do their work remotely will continue to report to work until further notice.

Masters and Doctoral students at Carey Theological College have already been studying in a completely or predominantly online environment for several years. Carey expects that disruptions for these students will be minimal. Classes for the Winter Term concluded on March 13 with final papers and examinations taking place online, as originally planned. The start of Spring Term on March 30, with online courses already scheduled, will continue as planned. Any remaining face-to-face classroom components will be scheduled online. The June 12 convocation ceremony for Carey Theological College will be postponed. We will be in touch with graduates regarding alternate plans.

UBC students who live in Carey’s student residence are impacted as UBC and other affiliated colleges move towards online classes. Some of our students have chosen to go home while others have decided to remain in residence. We continue to follow the measures recommended by the health authorities including:

  • Informing all guests to follow the health authorities’ recommendation for self-isolation and additional measures for those who are from Wuhan Province, Italy and Iran;
  • More frequent cleaning of common areas and high-touch areas including deeper cleaning of short-term accommodation facilities;
  • Housekeeping staff wearing protective equipment;
  • Providing additional reminders and encouraging good handwashing practices;
  • Bringing food and cutlery service behind serving stations for meals in our dining hall
  • Adding additional hand sanitizing stations;
  • Cancelling all Carey group events that limit the distance of participants (All large group events have been cancelled);

We trust the Lord for His good provision for us as a community in these challenging times. Keep us in your prayers, and be assured of our prayers for each of you.

COVID-19 is a respiratory disease first identified at the end of 2019 that continues to cause international and local concerns. Carey is monitoring the situation and will update this information page as appropriate.

In light of the confirmed cases in BC, we feel it is important to communicate that we have protocols in place to respond to health and safety concerns. Our dedicated management team is monitoring the situation closely and ensuring that Carey has plans in place to mitigate risks. We have also heightened the preventative measures we are taking in Carey’s facilities to promote a safer environment, including but not limited to: deeper cleaning, maintaining an inventory of protection supplies, posting additional reminders for good handwashing practices, bringing food and cutlery service behind serving stations for meals in our dining hall, and adding additional hand sanitizing stations. We also respectfully ask that all individuals of the Carey community and guests to kindly follow BC Centre for Disease Control’s advice of 14-day monitoring and self-isolation guidelines and to contact medical professionals if they experience any COVID-19 symptoms. At the present time, all on-site events will continue as scheduled unless otherwise directed by health authorities.

We continue to pay close attention to the latest information and health protocols issued by the public health authorities for the general public, including the Public Health Agency of Canada and BC Centre for Disease Control. As a post-secondary institution and an affiliated college of University of British Columbia, we are also attentive and adhere to the specific recommendations, responses and updates provided by BC Provincial Health and UBC. We trust that you will find the linked platforms to be most helpful for the latest information and health protocols. As information and data availability continues to change quickly, we strongly encourage you to regularly visit these platforms for the most up to date and accurate information.

Thank you for your attention. For information about specific activities, please reach out to your event contact person. For additional questions or concerns, please contact our Building and Accommodations team at info@carey-edu.ca.
