Carey Theological College is excited to share that Dr. Wil Rogan, Assistant Professor in Biblical Studies (New Testament), has recently published his book Purity in the Gospel of John: Early Jewish Tradition, Christology, and Ethics.
In his book, Dr. Rogan challenges conventional interpretations of the Gospel of John. Contrary to the twentieth-century interpretation that the Fourth Gospel replaced purity with faith in Jesus, Dr. Rogan contends that its discourse about purity functions as a way to make sense of life before God in the world. Drawing on biblical and early Jewish traditions, he examines how purity functions in preparing God's people for the arrival of Jesus. Dr. Rogan unveils how purity shapes the Fourth Gospel's claims about Christology, salvation, and ethics. Through purity, the Fourth Gospel guards continuity with the past while placing surprising conditions on participation in Israel’s future.
Purity in the Gospel of John: Early Jewish Tradition, Christology, and Ethics is published by T & T Clark. The book is available on the publisher’s website and Amazon for purchase. Dr. Rogan’s book can also be accessed through our Digital Theological Library 2.
